Boundaries are doors, not walls

Boundaries are doors, not walls

A good boundary doesn’t keep people out. It shows them where the entrance is, and how to come in well.

A rough wooden gate set into an old dry stone wall

The word boundary has picked up a cold edge lately. It can sound like a verdict: this is where you end and I begin, keep out. No wonder so many people feel guilty setting one.

I think of a boundary as a gate in a wall. The wall says “go away.” The gate says “here is how to come in.”

What a gate sounds like

A wall: “I can’t talk to you when you’re like this.” A gate: “I want to hear this, and I can’t take it in while we’re raising our voices. Can we try again after dinner?”

Both protect you. Only one leaves a way back. The gate names what you need and offers a path that keeps the relationship whole.

Notice that the gate is not softer than the wall. It is just as clear. It simply assumes the other person wants to stay close, and gives them a way to do it.

The kindest boundary tells the truth about your limits and still leaves the latch within reach.

Hold it without hardening

People will test a new boundary. Not out of malice, usually, but because the old pattern was familiar. You don’t need to argue your case again. Repeat it, warmly and briefly, as often as it takes.

If you find yourself building higher and higher walls with someone, pay attention to that. It may mean the gate was never respected. Or it may mean you have been too tired to keep showing them where it is. Both are worth bringing into a session.
