Small rituals, kept

Small rituals, kept

The relationships that feel steady are built on tiny, repeated things. A few rituals worth borrowing, and how to make them stick.

When people tell me about the best stretches of their relationships, they rarely describe grand gestures. They describe Sunday pancakes. The walk after dinner. The way someone always warmed up the car first on winter mornings.

Rituals are small acts done on purpose and repeated until they become part of the shape of a life. They give a relationship a rhythm, something to lean on when everything else is shifting.

They also do something quieter. Each time you keep one, you send a message without saying a word: I’m still choosing this. Over months, those messages add up to trust.

A few worth borrowing

These are a few that clients have shared with me over the years. Take what fits and leave the rest.

  • A six-second hug at the door, long enough to actually arrive.

  • A Sunday check-in: one thing that went well, one thing that was hard, one thing you need this week.

  • Reading the same book, slowly, a chapter at a time.

  • A goodnight that is said, not mumbled from behind a screen.

A ritual is a promise you keep so often that it stops feeling like effort and starts feeling like home.

Make it yours, keep it small

The ritual matters less than the keeping. Pick something so easy you can’t talk yourself out of it. If it starts to feel like a chore, shrink it rather than drop it.

Rituals work for single people and friendships too. A standing call with your sister. Coffee on the front steps before the day begins. Any small thing that says, again and again, this matters to me.

Start with one this week. Notice how it feels the fourth time, and then the tenth.
